Treatment For Skin Acne - Prognosis for a Cure

Prior to discussing potential acne treatments, it is helpful to consider the question of whether or not skin acne can be prevented. For those who have contracted the condition, millions of dollars are spent each year on remedies that promise hope for relief of the symptoms. Various causes for the condition have been discussed over the years with no clear consensus of defining a single cause.

Diet

In the western world, there is emphatic denial that diet is a factor in causing acne.  However, proponents of the concept point to the fact that in countries where the typical diet is much plainer than that of the West, acne is much less common.  It has not yet been determined whether this fact is diet related or genetics related. For those who consume significant portions of junk food, chocolate or high fat and sugar foods and have skin acne, that may be incentive enough to modify the diet to disallow some of these questionable dietary components.

Cleanliness

Experts and medical researchers are agreed on one fact--acne is not caused by dirt on the skin.  Acne is a result of incomplete metabolization of oil in the body.  The dead skin cells become sticky, thus blocking the pores of the skin, trapping bacteria inside and causing inflammation and infection. Because acne is a result of bacteria present on the skin, a treatment for acne must include several different methods.  Changing the diet to disallow fatty foods is not enough to assure a cure for acne, since the body produces oil regardless of whether or not oily foods are ingested.

New Remedies for Acne

Some of the new acne treatments are preliminary work only with more research on the modality yet to come. For example, zinc gluconate and some antibiotics administered orally are both effective in the treatment for acne. Preliminary work has been done on the treatment of using insulin for healing.
Another recent small study used chromium supplements for an acne remedy found to be effective.  Still another somewhat controversial link has been found between acne and milk.    According to "The Acne Prescription" by Nicholas Perricone, utilizing a rigid diet which little or no dairy products has proven effective in reducing the number and severity of acne lesions.  The same author recommends applications of alpha lipoic acid.  Limited support for Perricone's theories has surfaced since 2005.

Lasers

The use of lasers for treatment of the condition as well as for prevention of acne is another area where research is continuing. It is understood that laser treatment is effective in cosmetic surgery that repairs the scars caused by severe acne, but recently laser treatment has been tried to prevent acne as well as treat the scars.  The prevention efforts remove scar tissue, but the laser efforts also can destroy the follicle sac that holds the hair.  Destruction of the sebaceous gland because it is burned away by the laser treatment is the negative side of using the laser to destroy the harmful skin bacteria.
